From the School Counselor’s Desk

BAIS teachers use a variety of creative strategies in and out of class to help our students thrive academically, physically, socially, and spiritually. Occasionally, however, teachers identify students who need further support to meet their academic or behavioral goals. For those students who are referred by teachers, we begin a process with them called RTI (Response to Intervention). RTI is a three-tier system in which teachers partner with parents and the student, the school counselor, and administrators to come up with an intervention plan to help students reach learning targets or behavioral goals.

This year, we’ve been blessed to include an addition to our RTI team: Alithia Davis, our special education consultant. With her expertise in the field of special education, she has already been a valuable resource to the RTI program!

Below is a brief outline of how the RTI process typically works. While it is usually teacher-initiated, we also welcome parent referrals as well.

Tier 1: Classroom accommodations and collaboration with parents

When a teacher notices a student struggling either academically or behaviorally, they begin documenting their observations and implementing strategies and accommodations to help the student be successful. The teacher will also be in contact with parents to let them know of the concern and to collaborate with them to find a solution.

Tier 2: Phase 1: Collaborative Observation and Meeting with Teachers

  1. After attempting to address issues in class, and after seeking parental input, if a student is still not successful and meeting academic and/or behavioral goals, a teacher can refer a student to the school counselor to begin the RTI process.
  2. The counselor collects input from teachers about what they have observed in their classes, what accommodations they have tried, and how successful they have been.
  3. Teachers (usually just the homeroom teacher in elementary), counselor, and administrator meet to discuss possible goals and interventions to use with that student.

Tier 2: Phase 2: ILP and Parent Meeting with Counselor and Administrator

  1. The counselor, administrator, and homeroom teacher in Elementary, meet with parents to discuss goals for the student, and strategies and interventions to help meet these goals.
  2. The counselor creates an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) based on the goals discussed and shares it with parents and teachers. Only at this point may modifications to the curriculum be given.
  3. On a quarterly basis, the ILP is re-evaluated based on feedback from teachers and parents and adjusted accordingly.

Tier 3: Outside Referral

If the student is still not meeting academic and behavioral goals after several attempts at adjusting their ILP, they may be referred for further outside consultation, testing, or therapy.

At BAIS, our teachers and administrators are consistently working towards our goal of each student reaching their full potential in academics as well as physically, socially, and spiritually. Our hope is that as we partner with parents and teachers, the RTI program can help us reach that goal.

Health Buzz

This week we have seen several students with upper respiratory symptoms and low-grade fevers. As per the parent student handbook page 10, students will be sent home if any of the symptoms/diseases listed are present.

Check your child(ren) daily for any fever before they leave for school.

Please help prevent illness from spreading by reminding your students to cover their mouth when they cough, wash hands or use antiseptic gel frequently, get at least 8 hours of sleep nightly, eat well balanced meals with fresh fruits and vegetables, and take a multivitamin daily. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO – DAC

The Directors Advisory Council, known as DAC, is a group of parents that have primarily three tasks: Assist the director by providing local input and advice.

  1. Commit to supporting the Director in being successful in accomplishing the mission and vision of the school.
  2. Communicate with the Home Office in the event there is an issue that cannot be resolved locally.

This important group of people are crucial to the success of the school. The DAC meets monthly with the director to review the finances, discuss upcoming policy changes, and make suggestions based on the feedback from their respective communities. This is not a policy making board, but one of the important points of input when we are creating and or implementing policy.
