From the Secondary Principal
The theme for professional development this year is called “Assess and Adjust.” Assess and adjust is related to how teachers administer diagnostic, formative, or summatives assessments and then use that data to modify instruction and plan future learning. The analysis of assessment data allows teachers to identify areas of mastery and areas of growth so they can make decisions about content or skills that need more practice or if the cohort of students can move onward to the next unit of study.
A popular format for assessment creation was developed by education experts Jay McTighe and Grant Wiggins in the work Understanding by Design, and it uses the acronym of GRASPS when creating assessments.

P – Real-world Product (or Performance)
S – Standards
During first semester late-starts, teachers have collaborated to create new summative assessments for the third or fourth quarter that included as many of the GRASPS characteristics as possible leading to learning experiences that went deeper and moved far beyond traditional tests. Students are not only learning content and skills, they are applying all they have learned to unfamiliar situations, demonstrating mastery!

I have been impressed to see our young scientists compete with CBCS in a chemical-reaction driven locomotive competition. It was exciting to see middle school students produce a theater set design inspired by the content from The Phantom Tollbooth. One AP class even curated a museum dedicated to the interrelatedness of culture, technology, language, and religion during the 18th & 19th Centuries. I continue to remain proud of how our teachers continue to learn and grow professionally and how our students explore new learning opportunities with courage and an open mind!

Backyard Bible Club

Who: Prek4- 5th graders
What: Time to learn Bible stories, verses, songs, play games and have fun!
When: Every Thursday from 4:00-5:00 pm, starting the 28th of February

Week Without Walls projects!
The WWW planning committee is so excited about the projects being planned for this year! Please join us in praying for the following projects that will serve our community, both near (right and campus) and far (rural islands)!
PreK & Kinder
PreK, Kinder, and some big friends will work together to encourage others through acts of service including baking and car/bike washing.
Sports & Prison Ministry
BAIS will partner with a local soccer and prison outreach to support local boys through service and sports!
ACSC
We have visited this special needs school for several years during WWW. We will join their students for a variety of activities that we hope will be fun, encouraging, and build relationships and compassion.
Sea Tribes
BAIS secondary students will visit small rural islands.
Home of Love (YKAKI)
We will encourage and support children with cancer who are staying in this home while going through treatment.
TK Pengharapan
This group of 1st and 2nd graders, as well as some secondary students, will visit a local preschool in KBP to build relationships, teach English, and have fun!
Drama Project
Local university students will come to BAIS to participate in drama camp! BAIS students will help lead as well as participate and build friendships.
Rumah Ruth
Secondary girls will have the opportunity to encourage and support mothers in need.
Talk Less, Do More
Students will encourage others by helping with construction projects.
Love your Neighbor
BAIS students will visit local schools for relationship building and to share about health and hygiene skills.
Barnabas
BAIS students will intentionally encourage and support the BAIS community as we all participate in WWW together.
Prayer & Service
Students will grow closer to God while focusing on prayer walking and serving others.
One of the WWW projects this year is going to Home of Love and YKAKI. These two homes are for families with children who have cancer. We, as a community, are looking for some donations to bless them with. If you have any of the following items that you would like to donate, please drop them off at the front office. Thank you!

February 28 is storybook day!
We are going to celebrate our theme “Cooking Up A Tasty Story” by reading books and eating pancakes together. On that note, we would like to invite all of our elementary parents to come eat and read together on Thursday February 28, starting at 08:00 in the MPR!
Feel free to bring books with your native language to read together with your kids!
Summer Program for High Schoolers
When talking with BAIS graduate Tivara Tanudjaja after her first semester of university, one thing she said that was really helpful in deciding where to apply for school was the summer programs she did before her senior year. It helped her know which schools she want to apply to and even helped her eliminate schools from her list.
Throughout the school year, we receive information about summer programs at universities around the world. We have combined it into one document for quick access and would like to pass that information along for you and your student to look into. Please be aware that some due dates are coming up quickly.

Team captain and graduating senior Kirstie said, “The Friday game helped each one of us find confidence in basketball. Because we were confident, we were able to perform a lot better in this game. Everyone playing on the court knew what to do and did their best till the very end. I hope we could bring that confidence into IISSAC and end this season well.”

Mr. Thomas: “Our last regular season game of the 18-19 school year was excellent and a lot of fun. It was great having a chance to honor the 12th grade student-athletes, Paul and Daniel, with a lot of playing time and opportunities. Everyone played and a lot of players scored. We’re excited about IISSAC and appreciative of so many parents coming to Salatiga to watch! Don’t forget about the livestream available on Facebook.”
Senior and captain Paul said, “Last Friday’s game was a great last home game to end on. Our team played well together, we had fun, and I scored a three-pointer! I feel as though when any team does anything together, it is best done in joy and freedom, which is exactly what our team did last Friday, and is what we hope to do this weekend at IISSAC.”
Freshman Jake said, “The game on Friday was more of a game for seniors (for Daniel and Paul) since it was their last regular season game. Sadly, I got injured that game, but thank God it wasn’t a serious one. All of our subs got to play on the court and scored some. I am excited for the IISSAC tournament, and I want to make Paul and Daniel as happy as possible. I am looking forward to bringing the trophy this weekend…”
After School Clubs and Activities
Season three after school activities and clubs has started!
Thank you to all the parents, students, staff, and community members that take the time and energy that allows us to open 28 different clubs for our students!
The 2019 IISSAC Swim competition will be at Surabaya (SIS) on April 26-28.
This year’s IISSAC Cross Country and Badminton will be at Malang (Wesley) on April 26-28. IISSAC Cross Country and Running Club started Monday!
Ibu Hani: “Parents, thank you so much for letting your child join Cross Country this year. I am very excited about coaching this team. This first week we were slow starting, but we will be increasing our strength training and endurance in the weeks to come. I am partnering with a coupleteachers and parents to ensure the student’s training is painfully fun and successful. If you are interested in running with us, please let me know.”
IISSAC Swim tryouts will be Feb. 26 at 4pm at the BAIS Pool!
