From the Director’s Desk

Dear BAIS Community,

Welcome to the end of the first week of our 2019-2020 school year! We are excited to welcome our 45 new students this year and for all of us together to celebrate our theme of Awaken the Wonder!

For those parents returning to BAIS, thank you so much for continuing to partner with BAIS to educate your children. For this school year, there have been some changes to our personnel, and I would love to take this opportunity to introduce some of the new people you will be seeing around campus!

Mrs. Rachael Stanford – Mrs. Stanford is the 5th grade homeroom teacher and responsible for teaching math, science, and social studies to the 4th and 5th grade.

Miss Grace – Miss Grace is an elementary teacher’s assistant and will be working in Grade 1.

Patricia Haris – Ibu Patty is moving from her position as accountant and has taken the position of Business Manager. She is now located in the administrator’s office area.

Ivana – is replacing Patty as the new accountant. She is newly graduated from Maranatha Christian University in Bandung.

I will be serving as the interim Elementary Principal during our search for the new principal over the course of this year.

On the next page there some more people to introduce! When you see them, please welcome all our new staff to BAIS! We are looking forward to a wonderful school year!

Sincerely,
Karl Nielsen
Director

Piano Accompanists for Drama
The BAIS Drama is looking for piano accompanists. If you would be willing to come to drama rehearsals on Wednesdays from 4:15-6:15 and play piano for us, please contact either Ms. LaMertha at elizabethlamertha@baisedu.org or Mrs. Loewen at melanieloewen@baisedu.org. This is open to parents or students. If we get more than one person willing to help us, we can make a rotation schedule.

Sea Tribe

Sea Tribe is a ten day trip in which BAIS students participate in ethno-tourism on the Riau Islands. Students typically visit two islands over the course of the trip, living with host families on each island for four days. During their stay on the islands, students serve the community in a variety of tangible ways: they teach English in local schools, work with locals on community development projects, and organize games and skits for the children. They also learn about the island culture through eating and cooking with host families, participating in community ceremonies, and playing sports with locals. Through these activities, BAIS students build relationships with their host families and other community members through conversation and shared experience. The Sea Tribe trip is open for students in 9th – 12th grade and applications are now available. If you or your student have any questions you can contact Ms. Hays at amyhays@baisedu.org

Secondary Update

Teaching your students brings us all great joy and satisfaction. We love what we do and do what we love! However, there is also great responsibility in the privilege of teaching students. After all, scripture tells us that those who teach are held to a higher standard. Some translations call this “stricter judgement” (James 3:1). On the good days and on the tough days, we are thankful and take in all seriousness this warning.

God has provided mightily to meet out staffing needs this year! I am excited to introduce Mrs. Kate Gasson, formerly a BAIS art teacher and now leading the English Language Development (ELD) program. Ms. Alithia Davis is joining ELD, currently in elementary, and she is also assisting us with her expertise in special educational needs and the implementation of the Response to Intervention (RTI) process with Ms. Kelly Wongkar. Ms. Felisitas Sunardi is teaching Pre-K3 – 12th grade music and she brings energy, joy, and a broad range of musical expertise including a love of percussion, angklung, and piano. Joining our excellent Indonesian Education Program (IEP) is Ms. Dose Simamora. Please welcome these new experts into our community!

From last year, please remember that parents can check their student’s progress, grades, and missing work in PowerSchool. You can also ask your students to show you their passport/discipline card to monitor tardies, homework, non-compliance, and the English Only Policy.

It is a blessing, privilege, and awesome responsibility to serve you this year. Please let me know if you have suggestions or concerns. We are always exploring ways to continually improve and grow. In fact, one of our three secondary teachers’ core values is “growing together.” Let’s partner together for the excellence of BAIS and the benefit of the students!

Mr. Thomas
Secondary Principal
