SEW Has Arrived!

The Venerable Tenzin Priyadarshi, founding director of the Dalai Lama Center for Ethics and Transformative Values at MIT is quoted as saying, “Spiritual experiences are as real as awake moments. Like with love, kindness, compassion, fear, surprise — there are stories around these powerful experiences, but no metrics.” He added that there is a tendency to polarize secular versus religious life. “Life is really both, but people are just not paying attention,” he said. We at BAIS wholeheartedly agree that a healthy life revolves around physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being. Therefore, we set aside the week of American Thanksgiving as a time for your students to focus their attention on their personal spiritual well-being. That week is upon us once again!

Next week, the students will leave the books in their lockers, turn off their devices, lock the classroom doors and set out on a journey of spiritual rediscovery. As you know, when we are confronted and overwhelmed with the responsibilities of the day, it becomes quite easy to postpone our personal devotion time and neglect our spiritual health. By setting aside this week of self-examination, we hope to model to the students the importance of spiritual health and eternal well-being. After all, it was Plato who is quoted as saying, “An unexamined life is not worth living.”

As always, SEW activities are open to the entire BAIS community. We encourage everyone to join us for praise and worship, speaker sessions, VBS activities, small group discussions, and personal moments of reflection. You can find the SEW schedule on the next page. I hope to see you there!

Blessings in Christ,

ANGEL GIFT TREE for the BALI CHILDREN’S HOMES

Dear Students, Parents, and Teachers,

We will have our annual Angel Gift Tree for the Bali Children’s Homes again this year. In case you have never participated in this event, it is a tangible way to share Christ’s love at Christmas with a group of children, youth and staff who live at the Bali Children’s Homes. Mr. and Mrs. Paese have been affiliated with this Christian orphanage for many years. Even though they are not at BAIS anymore, we want to continue the tradition of love and generosity from BAIS to Permata Bali Children’s Homes. This year the names and ages of children, youth and staff at the homes will be posted in the secondary hallway near room 202. To take part in this event you or your child can choose the name, and be sure to register with Ms Dickman so that we know you will buy that person a gift. Then buy a gift or several small gifts for this child, teen, or adult that cost around Rp 100,000.00 total. Wrap the gift, put a Christmas card inside to the recipient, and put the name tag given to you on the front of the wrapped package with your name and the recipient’s name on it.

Please bring your labeled gift to Ms Dickman in room 201 by Friday, December 9, 2016. We need the gifts by then because they will be sent in the mail to the children’s homes in time so that they will arrive for Christmas! Students must have their parents’ permission in order to choose a name. This event is open to teachers and parents as well. Look for names up in the hallway during the week of SEW and following.

Thank you for sharing the love of Jesus with those less fortunate than you. If you have any questions please ask Ms Dickman. Parents, if you wish for your child to participate in this activity please send an email giving permission, or please complete the form below and return it with your child.

Thanks so much for sharing,

Jana Dickman
