From the Secondary Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents,
It is astonishing that there are only six weeks of school left in the 16-17 school year! At this time I would like to thank all secondary parents for the collaborative partnership formed this year to keep students motivated and working hard. They will soon finish the race! It is with great anticipation that I await the myriad events planned to celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of our students.
One of these celebrations is Student-Led Conferences on May 12 from 8:00am – 5:00pm. This will be an opportunity for students in grades 6 – 11 to communicate five goals they set for themselves in September and demonstrate how they met those goals through the school year. (Grade 12 students will discuss their accomplishments at Senior Exit Interviews on May 15. Parents are welcome to attend their senior’s exit interview.) For the MAP tests, students received their Math, Reading, and Language Use scores and created targets for the Spring tests that will be administered between April 17 – 28. For the Writing Assessment, students were assessed against the Six Traits of Writing Rubric in the Fall. Soon after they set goals with their Language Arts teachers in order to improve writing skills. Soon they will receive final writing assessment scores indicating whether they met their projected goal. Additionally, each student created a spiritual, personal, and academic goal for the school year. At Student-Led Conferences, families will have the opportunity to celebrate the hard work, dedication, and learning from the school year. Our goal in secondary is to have 100% participation in these conferences. Please be aware that a signup form will be coming to your inbox soon to schedule a time for the conference.
At one of the Dialogue with Director sessions first semester, parents communicated they would appreciate a more active role in students registration for 17-18 classes. With that in mind, course registration will begin with a parent information session during the week of April 24. The final date and time will be announced soon. Some of the items discussed during the information session will be:
- the course registration timeline
- the updated student planner identifying courses for the 17-18 school year
- any major changes related to graduation requirements and new course offerings
- other announcements.
Additionally, students and parents will have time for discussion and collaboration in order to make a registration plan. Towards the middle of May, final course registration documents will be sent home for parents to sign.
Again, it with sincere thanks for our partnership and collaboration in educating our students. I look forward to continued success over the next six weeks.
Many blessings,
Mr. Thomas
Secondary Principal
